The Positive Shift: Mastering Mindset to Improve Happiness, Health, and Longevity by Catherine A. Sanderson, Ph.D (2019, published by BenBella Books)

My take:

Are you naturally happy? If you answered “yes” to this question, Sanderson suggests that you won’t need to read her book, The Positive Shift: Mastering Mindset to Improve Happiness, Health, and Longevity. Although I consider myself on the “happier” side of the scale, I still read this book, and I’m so glad I did!  I’m happier that I did 😊!

Sanderson states that our level of happiness, our physical health, and even our longevity is connected to how “we think about ourselves and our world around us”. In other words, our mindset.

By making small changes we can improve our happiness and health (both mental and physical). And if you are wondering where to start, there are several self-assessments provided in the book to better understand your starting mindset.

The book is chalk full of fairly, straightforward strategies and the science behind them to “shift your mindset”. Perhaps, not surprisingly, my favourite strategy was “read a book you love!”. Sanderson even cites a study that found reading for over 3 ½ hours a week can increase longevity! Count me in!

Great chapters on aging, memory, and health. Hint: don’t give into the stereotypes! Mindset matters!

I would argue that this book is for anyone looking for strategies on how to be happier regardless of your starting point. A must-read if you are wanting to make changes to your daily life for improved well-being.

Have you tried any of the strategies in the book? Do you think they had a positive impact on your well-being?

  9. Hi Joanna
I have been happy most of my life and a recent retirement at 79 years old has created a new paradigm search to adapt to a slower pace. Thanks for doing the research work to find great reads in this wild up and down tariff war without taxing happiness.
