Switch Craft: The Hidden Power of Mental Agility by Elaine Fox, Ph.D. (2022)
My take:
From global conflicts and political upheaval to rapid technological change and everyday uncertainty, it can sometimes feel as though the ground beneath us is constantly shifting. If you find that dealing with life’s uncertainty stressful, you’re not alone! In Switch Craft: The Hidden Power of Mental Agility, Fox (2022) describes how uncertainty can ramp up anxiety but also provides numerous evidence-based strategies to help you become more mentally agile to deal with the uncertainty. Becoming more mentally agile can improve well-being.
According to Fox, switch craft refers to “those natural skills that are necessary to help us navigate a complex and an unpredictable world”. The ability to change your thoughts, feelings, and actions can transform your life and enhance your resiliency. Life is complicated and in Switch Craft you learn when you might want to stick (continue doing what you’re doing) versus switch (change what you’re doing).
The book is full of exercises to raise your awareness about how you feel and react to uncertainty. You will find MANY strategies on how to better cope with uncertainty and how to become more mentally agile. Fox helps you go from worrying about uncertainty to learning to cope with it and becoming more mentally agile. The end of chapter summaries help identify the key concepts and techniques you can try.
One of my favourite techniques to increase psychological flexibility was to “read fiction”. Aside from all the amazing benefits you receive from reading (i.e., helps with memory and concentration, stress reduction, etc.), reading fiction allows you to see the world through different characters which can help broaden your perspective and when you broaden your perspective you increase psychological flexibility.
This is such an important book to help you learn how to be more comfortable with uncertainty and the negative feelings that may arise alongside it. Having a flexible mind can help you thrive in a changing environment. And life is constantly changing. I learned so much that I am going to re-read it. I highly recommend you read it at least once!
How challenging is uncertainty for you? What strategies have you tried to help you deal with uncertainty? Are some strategies more helpful under some conditions? Have you gone outside of your comfort zone to increase your mental flexibility?
